The writing of this relatively early concerto in 1878, one of three works for solo wind and military band, might well have formed part of Rimsky-Korsakov's duties as an inspector of wind orchestras of the Russian Naval Ministry. It was first performed on 16 March 1878 in Kronstadt with the composer conducting the United Bands of the Russian Navy Department with a naval officer Leonove as soloist.
