Norfolk Idyll is evocative of the English countryside & birdsong in summer, though with a wintry bite towards the end. It is based on the incidental music to the famous 1972 BBC TV documentary The Vanishing Hedgerows, in which author Henry Williamson lamented the effects upon the Norfolk countryside of modern farming methods. The music, based on a folksong like theme & at one point quoting the 13th century song Summer is icumen in, sought to evoke a nostalgia for the idyllic rural landscape.
