The title Pathetique came from Beethoven who possibly wanted to be understood in the sence of pathos or suffering. It is also possible that the title was related to Beethoven's recent awareness of his deteriorating hearing. Written in 1798 in Vienna, this quasi-tragic sonata always created a deep impression on listeners in Beethoven's day.
